What is Acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, leading to the formation of pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and sometimes deeper cysts or nodules.

It often appears on the face, chest, back, and shoulders. It’s important to consult with a skin care professional for personalised advice and treatment based on individual skin types and conditions.

There are different types of acne, including :

Non-inflammatory acne:  Characterized by blackheads and whiteheads, which are small, non-inflammatory lesions that develop when pores become clogged with oil and dead skin cells.

Inflammatory acne :  This type of acne involves red, swollen, and sometimes painful pimples, papules, pustules, nodules, or cysts. Inflammatory acne occurs when bacteria infect the blocked pores, leading to inflammation and infection.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions :

Acne is primarily caused by a combination of factors, including excess oil production, clogged hair follicles, bacteria, and hormonal changes.

No, acne can affect individuals of all ages. While it is common during puberty, adults can also experience acne due to various factors.

Acne can manifest as blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, nodules, or cysts. The severity can range from mild to severe.

Maintaining a consistent skincare routine, avoiding excessive touching of the face, and managing stress can help prevent acne breakouts.

While the relationship between diet and acne varies among individuals, some studies suggest that high-glycemic foods and dairy may contribute to acne in some people.

Over-the-counter products containing ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid can be effective for mild acne. However, severe cases may require prescription medications.

Dermatological procedures such as chemical peels, laser therapy, and extraction of cysts can be effective for treating acne, especially when topical or oral medications are insufficient.

Results vary, but improvement is often noticeable within a few weeks to a few months. Consistency with the chosen treatment is crucial.

Stress can contribute to hormonal changes that may exacerbate acne in some individuals. Stress management techniques may help in such cases.

Some acne medications, especially prescription-strength ones, may cause side effects such as dryness, redness, or peeling. It’s important to discuss potential side effects with a healthcare professional.

Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty, also known as an eye lift, is a surgical procedure performed on the eyelids to improve their appearance. It can address concerns like:

  • Excess skin on the upper eyelids: This can obstruct vision and create a hooded appearance.

  • Bags under the lower eyelids: These can make you look tired or aged.

  • Drooping lower eyelids: This can also obstruct vision and contribute to a tired appearance.

Types of Blepharoplasty:

  • Upper blepharoplasty: This addresses concerns with the upper eyelids, removing excess skin and sometimes fat or muscle tissue.

  • Lower blepharoplasty: This addresses concerns with the lower eyelids, removing excess fat or skin and sometimes repositioning tissues.

  • Asian blepharoplasty: This addresses specific concerns related to the anatomy of Asian eyelids, creating a more defined crease.
