Several Techniques for Entropion Surgery

Entropion surgery utilises various techniques to address the inward turning of your eyelid. The specific approach chosen depends on the severity and cause of your condition.

  • Posterior Lamellar Shortening: This minimally invasive approach tightens the inner layer of your eyelid without affecting the outer appearance.
  • Tarsal Wedge Resection: A small wedge of tissue is removed from the tarsus (the supportive structure of your eyelid) to achieve a proper inward curve.
  • Medial Canthoplasty: This procedure strengthens the inner corner of your eyelid by tightening the ligaments that support it.
  • Lateral Canthotomy: In some cases, a small incision is made in the outer corner to release tension and allow for better eyelid positioning.
  • Flap Procedures: Tissue from nearby areas is used to rebuild and reinforce the eyelid structure, correcting its inward turning.
  • Conjunctival Resection: This technique removes a small section of conjunctiva (the clear tissue lining your eye) to allow for proper eyelid positioning.

FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

Entropion is a condition where your eyelid turns inward, causing your eyelashes to rub against your eye. This can be very irritating and uncomfortable.

Surgery can correct the inward turning of the eyelid, relieving symptoms like irritation, pain, and watering eyes. It can also prevent damage to the cornea (the clear surface of your eye) from your eyelashes.

If you have entropion and it’s causing you problems, your surgeon Mr Jeeva can discuss if surgery is the best option for you.

The most common types of surgery depend on the location of the entropion (upper or lower eyelid) and the cause. Procedures might involve tightening tissues, removing a small piece of tissue, or using a skin graft or flap to reposition the eyelid.

Entropion surgery is usually done as an outpatient procedure under local anaesthesia with sedation. Depending on the type of surgery, your surgeon will address the inward turning to achieve a comfortable and proper position for your eyelid.

Entropion surgery typically takes 30 minutes to an hour.

You might experience some bruising, swelling, and discomfort around the eye. Your surgeon Mr Jeeva will provide specific instructions on how to care for your eye during recovery.

Most people can go home the same day as surgery. Recovery typically takes a few weeks, with most symptoms subsiding gradually.

As with any surgery, there are some risks, such as infection, bleeding, and asymmetry (uneven appearance of the eyelids). Discuss these potential risks with your surgeon Mr Jeeva.

While entropion surgery is usually effective, there’s a chance it could recur, especially with age-related entropion.

Your surgeon Mr Jeeva may prescribe antibiotics or eye drops to help prevent infection and promote healing.

You’ll likely need to avoid strenuous activity for a while after surgery. Your surgeon Mr Jeeva will advise you on specific restrictions.

Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty, also known as an eye lift, is a surgical procedure performed on the eyelids to improve their appearance. It can address concerns like:

  • Excess skin on the upper eyelids: This can obstruct vision and create a hooded appearance.

  • Bags under the lower eyelids: These can make you look tired or aged.

  • Drooping lower eyelids: This can also obstruct vision and contribute to a tired appearance.

Types of Blepharoplasty:

  • Upper blepharoplasty: This addresses concerns with the upper eyelids, removing excess skin and sometimes fat or muscle tissue.

  • Lower blepharoplasty: This addresses concerns with the lower eyelids, removing excess fat or skin and sometimes repositioning tissues.

  • Asian blepharoplasty: This addresses specific concerns related to the anatomy of Asian eyelids, creating a more defined crease.
