All About
Ptosis Correction

Ptosis correction is a surgical procedure to elevate a drooping eyelid. The drooping can be caused by a weakened levator muscle, which is responsible for lifting the upper eyelid.

Ptosis can also be caused by other factors, such as ageing, trauma, or nerve damage.

Ptosis correction can improve vision and appearance. It can also help to reduce eye fatigue and headaches. If you are considering ptosis correction, it is important to consult with our  ophthalmologist (eye doctor) to discuss your options.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Ptosis surgery can be performed for various reasons, including:

  • Reduced vision
  • Difficulty keeping the eyes open
  • A tired appearance
  • Facial asymmetry
  • Eye strain or headaches from using the eyebrows and forehead to lift the eyelids

During ptosis surgery, the main muscle that lifts the eyelid is advanced and reattached. The procedure can be performed using either:

  • Anterior Approach: An incision is made through the natural skin crease of the eyelid, hiding the scar in the crease.
  • Posterior Approach: An incision is made on the underside of the eyelid, hiding the scar inside.

The surgery is done under local anaesthesia and may include ‘twilight’ sedation. The anaesthetist may wake you up during surgery to adjust and assess the eyelid height and symmetry accurately.

Ptosis surgery is performed under local anaesthesia, ensuring no pain or discomfort during the procedure. Most patients are pain-free post-surgery and do not require painkillers.

Each eyelid takes approximately 45 minutes to complete.

  • Initial Healing: Most healing occurs within the first 2-3 weeks.
  • Swelling: Some residual swelling may persist for 1-2 weeks.
  • Complete Healing: Full recovery can take many months, up to 2 years. Factors like age, smoking, blood-thinning medication, and medical conditions such as diabetes can affect the healing process.

The cost of ptosis surgery starts at £2200.

Ptosis surgery is common among older individuals but young people may also benefit from it.

The primary objective is to improve the drooping of the upper eyelid, which enhances vision and aesthetics.

You will have an initial consultation with an expert specialist in ptosis surgery to discuss your specific needs, expectations, and any potential risks or complications.

Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty, also known as an eye lift, is a surgical procedure performed on the eyelids to improve their appearance. It can address concerns like:

  • Excess skin on the upper eyelids: This can obstruct vision and create a hooded appearance.

  • Bags under the lower eyelids: These can make you look tired or aged.

  • Drooping lower eyelids: This can also obstruct vision and contribute to a tired appearance.

Types of Blepharoplasty:

  • Upper blepharoplasty: This addresses concerns with the upper eyelids, removing excess skin and sometimes fat or muscle tissue.

  • Lower blepharoplasty: This addresses concerns with the lower eyelids, removing excess fat or skin and sometimes repositioning tissues.

  • Asian blepharoplasty: This addresses specific concerns related to the anatomy of Asian eyelids, creating a more defined crease.
